Why is it Called Pikes Peak?

Dec 7, 2025
Pikes Peak is named after the American explorer Zebulon Pike, who was the first documented white explorer to observe the mountain, although he never actually summited it. Pikes Peak, located in Colorado, was originally known by the Ute people as Tava, meaning "Sun Mountain."
This name reflects the mountain's prominence and its significance to the indigenous people long before European explorers arrived. When Zebulon Pike explored the area in 1806, he referred to it as "the Grand Peak" or "Highest Peak," but he did not name it after himself.
