Tour 16D Kokomo:  Opalescent Glass Factory Tour, Historic RR Depot and Train Watch Tower, Kokomo Automotive Museum

Kokomo Opalescent Glass is a manufacturer of colored glass for art and architecture with worldwide distribution and a strong commitment to research, education, and promoting sheet glass art. Based in Kokomo, Indiana for 125 years, the factory is known worldwide for hand mixed sheet glass art and colored glass.

Step back in time with a tour of Kokomo Opalescent Glass. Treat yourself to the fascinating technique of making art in art sheet glass form. The factory still manufactures art sheet glass the same way it was made more than a century ago. In addition, you will see our glass blowers at work making anything from blown glass roundels to exclusive one of a kind blown glass paperweights and vases.

While in downtown Kokomo, you will take a tour and have photo opportunities at the Train Watch Tower and Historic Railroad Depot.

After lunch, you will experience America's love affair with the automobile by visiting the Kokomo Automotive Museum. The Kokomo Automotive Museum has a wonderful collection of over 100 vintage automobiles, including several that were built in Kokomo, Indiana. You will be able to stop and think about the impact that automobiles have had on American industry and culture. For some, the automobile represents a manufacturing livelihood. In Kokomo where the museum is located, generations of families made their living by working at Chrysler or Delco. This once automotive town, tagged as the "City of Firsts," is home to Elwood Haynes, who along with the Apperson Brothers, built America's first gasoline-powered car in 1894.

In addition to the more than 100 antique cars, those who appreciate vintage advertising, clothing and antiques will enjoy the great collection of signage and variety of memorabilia relevant to the history of the cars on display. Step back in time and enjoy the 1950s diner and service station diorama. A gift shop offers a variety of souvenirs to mark your day in Kokomo.

Note:  Requirements for the factory tour:
  • Walkers and Oxygen tanks are not permitted on the tour, they are welcomed in the retail shop.  [Not ADA Compliant]
  • Feet must be completely enclosed in thick soled shoes. No canvas, open toed, open heeled, flip-flops, or clog style shoes are permitted due to OSHA Safety Regulations.
  • The factory has no climate control, so you will need to dress for the weather.
  • Temperatures vary greatly throughout the factory even in the winter, and can be extremely hot in the summer.
