Blast-3LCCA Commemorates 4-12-12 150th Anniversary of The Great Train Chase

LCCA members were in Kennesaw GA to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Great Train Chase.  April 12, 2012 marked the 150th anniversary of the actual event in which James Andrews and a group of Union raiders captured the locomotive General in Big Shanty (modern Kennesaw) only to be pursued and caught by William Fuller and Confederates using, over the course of the chase, three different locomotives, most notably the Texas.

Blast-2The day started with an early morning breakfast at the Shanty Restaurant near the site of the chase.  Local dignitaries were on hand for the 150th Proclamation of the Great Locomotive and cannon firing.  LCCA Members were provided  a private  tour aboard the  CSX Executive train which was brought in especially for this anniversary commemoration.  The CSX Executive train was parked near the origin site of The Great Train Chase.  Members were also given a private, behind the scenes tour of the Southern Museum of the Civil War and a view of their rarely seen archives.

blast-1During the evening ceremony, Al Kolis, Immediate Past President and LCCA Special Events Manager presented the museum with framed renderings of the upcoming Limited edition pair of

LCCA General trains commemorating the Great Train Chase. These two commemorative engines will be produced by Lionel exclusively for LCCA Members. Once these engines are delivered to the LCCA by Lionel, we will donate a pair of them to the museum.

Blast-4Member Bill Stitt was there representing the LCCA and operating LCCA's mini layout which was designed and built by TW Design of Dallas TX.  A local group of LCCA members (Les Livingston & the North Atlanta O-gage Railroad Club) had their 8X8'modular layout in operation throughout the day.  This layout was designed specifically for the enjoyment of children in attendance.

A special thanks to Lionel enthusiast and executive Director of  the Southern Museum, Dr Richard Banz, and his entire staff for giving us so much southern hospitality. Our members truly had an enjoyable and memorable special day.  Most of all, sincere thanks go out to the numerous LCCA members and families who attended this LCCA Special Event.  We had a fun, educational and historic day.

The LCCA continues to offer its members significant value. The magazines, the website with its videos (I encourage you to look at part 5 of Jerry Calabrese's interview discussing industry futures - it is worth the time), the wonderful upcoming product choices with breakout items for niche markets while keeping the traditional LCCA offerings and the highly collectable convention cars (the 2012 car is a real keeper). The new LCC Modular group will make its debut at the convention. The wonderful special events provide a new way to enjoy not only membership, but also our hobby.

In closing, let me encourage your attendance at the July Convention. The convention team this year has prepared an exceptional tour package and again has all the regular events and a few new clinics (with a few surprises). This is the first year we are offering a locomotive as a registration gift, just sign up and stay with us for this gift. If you get in town early, be sure to stop by the welcoming meeting on Sunday evening. Be sure to look me up when you get there

Remember to keep your e-mail updated - and visit us at www.lionelcollectors.org

Glad you are in the Hobby and a member of the LCCA!
